Box Office Round Up - 8-20-2018

Crazy Rich Asians charmed its way to the top of the box office with $25 million for the weekend; however, the film actually opened on Wednesday, so the film’s current haul is $34 million. This was above industry expectations, and considering it received an “A” Cinemascore the film should have some good legs. UTA should be happy as they represent director Jon M. Chu and star Constance Wu. Paradigm will get in on the action as they rep co-star Henry Golding.
In second place with $21 million was giant shark adventure – The Meg – which has now taken in $84 million domestically and $230 million internationally.
In third place with $14 million was the action thriller Mile 22. This is a little softer than expected, but the film should do well overseas, particularly in Asia. WME won’t be too disappointed with these results; they rep director Peter Berg, star Mark Wahlberg and writers Lea Carpenter and Graham Roland.
Opening in fourth place with $10 million was the prehistoric adventure Alpha. The film did pretty much exactly how everyone was expecting it to do, but it did receive positive reviews. WME represents director Albert Hughes and writer Dan Wiedenhaupt. ICM reps star Kodi Smit-McPhee.
Dropping to fifth place was Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which technically tied for fourth with $10 million. The film has taken in $181 million domestically and now has a worldwide total of $500 million.
Outside the top five: Disney’s Christopher Robin fell to sixth place. Spike Lee’s BlacKkKlansman fell to seventh, while horror movie Slender Man came in eighth. Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation stayed in exactly the same spot at ninth place and Mama Mia! Here We Go Again came in tenth.
Next Week: Melissa McCarthy is going to solve a puppet murder in the long-gestating R-rated comedy The Happytime Murders, and in limited release, Jon Cho uses Facebook to find his missing daughter in Searching.
